Veal parm in Pittsburgh, PA: our top picks
Pittsburgh calls Bloomfield its Little Italy, and the name is earned. Beginning around 1900, Italians from a handful of towns in the Abruzzi region settled there, and Immaculate Conception parish followed in 1905. Since 2002 the Liberty Avenue business district has hosted Little Italy Days, a street festival grown big enough that not every neighbor is a fan. The city’s Italian pantry, though, sits in the Strip District: Pennsylvania Macaroni Co. has been in business since 1902, started as a pasta maker in Sharpsburg, moved to Penn Avenue after its factory burned around 1910, and is still run by the Sunseri family.
The Strip is also home to DiAnoia’s Eatery, which Dave Anoia, formerly chef de cuisine at Spoon in East Liberty, and Aimee DiAndrea opened on Penn Avenue in November 2016. By day it works as a deli, with eggplant parm among the sandwiches; at night the menu turns to pasta and larger plates. A few minutes away on Fifth Avenue, Vallozzi’s Pittsburgh carries a Greensburg family name downtown: Julian Vallozzi’s grandmother sold homemade pasta, his father built the family’s Greensburg restaurant, and Julian opened the city location in 2012, with chicken parm on a menu that also leans on Sicilian pizza and pappardelle bolognese.
The rest of the list is scattered over the hills. Cucina Vitale spent years as a small room on East Carson Street on the South Side before moving to a much larger space on Andersen Drive in Green Tree in late 2024, so older directions will steer you wrong. Out east, Pasqualino’s in Penn Hills opened in 1971 as Pizza Palace, a name some regulars still use, and has been on Frankstown Road since 1986. In the South Hills, Carbonara’s on Mt. Lebanon Boulevard puts chicken and veal parmigiano right up front on its own menu.
