Eggplant parm in San Antonio, TX: our top picks

San Antonio’s Italian story is older than most visitors guess. Italian immigrants began arriving in the 1870s, and by 1890 several families had built a neighborhood northwest of downtown and chartered the Christopher Columbus Italian Society. Their church, San Francesco di Paola, was dedicated on May 1, 1927, on what is now Piazza Italia, a short walk from the center of town.

The city’s best-known red-sauce name came later. Joe Cosniac moved here from Canada in 1968 and opened the first Paesanos with his partner Nick Pacelli on McCullough Avenue in 1969. That original room is gone, but the Lincoln Heights flagship on East Basse Road carries on, and so does Shrimp Paesano, the lemon-butter shrimp the restaurant has never taken off the menu. The eggplant parm keeps it company.

Little Italy Restaurant & Pizzeria, off West Avenue near Blanco on the North Side, belongs to the Visocaro family. They came from Palermo, ran a pizzeria in New York starting in 1969, and opened here in 1983; Angelo and Paola Visocaro’s recipes are still in use, and their son Dominick runs the place now. Expect Southern Italian plates alongside New York-style pizza.

Out on the West Side, La Sorrentina is a smaller family-run room where chef-owner Juan "Pepe" Rangel, who moved here from Chicago and learned Italian cooking in other people’s San Antonio kitchens, now runs his own place. The newcomer is Mare e Monte ("sea and mountain") on Huebner Road near the Medical Center, which held its grand opening in November 2024. Between them you get the whole range: a 1969 institution, a 1983 family pizzeria, a chef’s own neighborhood spot, and a dining room still being broken in.
