Eggplant parm in Dallas, TX: our top picks
Dallas’s red-sauce story starts with a Sicilian family and a bar. Carlo and Antonina Campisi came over from Sicily, and in 1946 they were serving pizza out of the Idle Hour, at Knox and McKinney. Around 1950 they moved into the old Egyptian Lounge on Mockingbird Lane and, short of money for a new sign, swapped "Lounge" for "Restaurant." The family still runs the Mockingbird room, and the Egyptian name is still out front.
Downtown has its own holdover. Porta Di Roma, a family-run room on Main Street, has served red-sauce Italian there for more than two decades: spaghetti marinara, lasagna, manicotti and veal parmigiana. Up Greenville Avenue, just north of Park Lane, the family-owned Roma’s Pizza & Italian Restaurant has been going since 2004 and moved into its current, bigger space in 2017; the pasta is made in house.
The newer places come at parm from different directions. Due’ Cucina, in the Lakewood Shopping Center on Abrams, comes from Davide Macchi and Filippo Fiori, high-school friends from Tuscany who started the business in Seattle. The pasta is made on site every day, and eggplant parmesan has turned up among the specials. In Victory Park, Urban Italia opened in January 2026 with Carla Pellegrino, who ran the kitchen at Rao’s in Las Vegas, cooking what the restaurant calls "Italia-Merica": the dishes that came out of immigrant kitchens and stayed. On Oak Lawn Avenue, Julian Barsotti’s restaurant opened as Carbone’s and became Barsotti’s in 2023 after a name dispute with New York’s Carbone; The Infatuation found the veal parm meaty and flavorful, if a little short on crunch.
So the range runs from a 1940s pizza bar to a counter that extrudes its own pasta. Chicken, veal or eggplant, it pays to ask what’s on the specials board.
