Veal parm in Indianapolis, IN: our top picks
Indianapolis was never a big Italian city, but it had a real Italian quarter, and you can still eat in it. By 1910 Italians ran 33 of the city’s 54 fruit and vegetable businesses, and Sicilian produce families settled around Virginia Avenue and East Street, at the southeast edge of downtown. Holy Rosary, an Italian parish founded there in 1909, finished its brick-and-stone church in 1925 and held its first Italian Street Festival in 1934; the parish revived the festival in the 1980s, and it still takes over the streets around the church.
A few blocks from the church, Iaria’s Italian Restaurant has been on the same South College Avenue corner since 1913. It was a grocery for about 20 years before Pete and Antonia Iaria turned it into a restaurant in 1933; their great-grandchildren’s generation owns it now, and the sauces are still family recipes. Iozzo’s Garden of Italy has the more cinematic story. Fred Iozzo, a Calabrian immigrant, ran a grand downtown Italian dining room in the 1930s that closed in the early 1940s after a notorious bar brawl. His great-granddaughter, Katie Harris, revived the name in 2009 on South Meridian Street, and in 2025 Chowhound picked it for Indiana’s best chicken parm.
The north side has its own family rooms, younger but hardly new. Ambrosia, run by the Pizzi family, opened in Broad Ripple in 1979 and later moved a short way south to College Avenue at Kessler Boulevard. Mama Carolla’s opened in April 1997 in a 1920s stucco house on East 54th Street; its founder, known simply as Mama, had lived in the neighborhood for about 20 years, and Papa built the bar by hand in his garage.
So the city’s parm splits neatly by geography: the old red-sauce lineage near Holy Rosary, just south of downtown, and the neighborhood places off College Avenue up north.
