Eggplant parm in New Haven, CT: our top picks
New Haven’s apizza fame starts on Wooster Street, where Frank Pepe opened in 1925 and Sally’s followed down the block in 1938. But the street was never only about pizza. Italians from Amalfi, Atrani and other towns in Campania settled Wooster Square from the 1880s, founded St. Michael’s parish and filled the neighborhood with bakeries, pasta shops and pastry counters, and in 1914 the Register called it "Little Naples." Libby’s has made pastry and Italian ice on Wooster Street since 1922.
The red-sauce side of that story is still on the street. Pasta Eataliana sits at the corner of Wooster and Chestnut, in a space that once held Tony & Lucille’s, which closed in 2019 after 53 years; it opened in 2020 under chef-owner Giulio Laurentino, a Naples native who used to run the kitchen at Anthony’s Ocean View. His menu leans Neapolitan, with ragu, braciole, house-made pasta and eggplant parmigiana from the opening menu on. Across town on State Street, Alphonse DeLucia has run Portofino’s since 1999; his parents named it for the Italian coastal town, and chicken parm is one of the dishes regulars come back for.
A lot of the area’s parm lives just over the city line. Ludal’s is on Broadway in North Haven, and out on Route 1 in Branford, Vincenzo LoMonaco has run LoMonaco’s since 1986: two modest dining rooms, a menu with as much seafood as red sauce, and pizza and calzones to go.
