Eggplant parm in Baltimore, MD: our top picks
Baltimore’s Little Italy sits just east of the Inner Harbor, a few rowhouse blocks wedged between downtown and Harbor East. Italian immigrants filled it in the late 1800s and early 1900s, and its anchor is still St. Leo the Great, established in 1881. The parish’s June festival for St. Anthony traces to local lore that prayers to the saint turned the Great Fire of 1904 away from the neighborhood, and on summer nights movies are projected onto a wall at High and Stiles streets.
The old guard still cooks. Sabatino’s has been around since 1955 and still serves its veal parm the old-school way. Chiapparelli’s dates to the 1940s and is run by the founder’s daughter-in-law and grandson. Vaccaro’s, a Sicilian bakery open since 1956, covers the cannoli.
Plenty of families didn’t stay downtown. In the 1940s many moved east to Highlandtown, where Luigi Di Pasquale had opened a corner store on Claremont Street in 1914. His grandson Joe now runs Di Pasquale’s from a bigger market in Brewers Hill, where the hot food includes eggplant parm alongside the meatball subs; the family’s old Gough Street building is now Forno, their pizza place. Out on Holabird Avenue toward Dundalk, Vinny’s Cafe comes from Vinny Scotto, who came from Naples by way of New York and opened in 1999, with his sons Marcello and Tony working on the specials. Remo’s of NY, in Parkville, leans into the New York theme with street signs on the walls; a 2015 visit found chicken parmigiana made with two breasts over angel hair.
