Chicken parm in Queens, NY: our top picks
Queens doesn’t keep its Italian-American cooking in one neighborhood, so a parm here can mean a deli hero, a pizzeria plate or a sit-down dinner, depending on which way you drive. Corona is the old anchor. The Lemon Ice King of Corona, which Nicola Benfaremo started in a garage in 1944, still holds its corner on 108th Street, and a few blocks away Leo’s Latticini, known to everyone as Mama’s, has been in the same family since the 1930s and makes its own mozzarella. Park Side, on Corona Avenue, is the neighborhood’s big sit-down room.
Head south on Cross Bay Boulevard and Howard Beach takes over. New Park Pizza has been turning out pies there since 1956, and Lenny’s Clam Bar got its corner co-named Lenny’s Clam Bar Way in 2024, on its 50th anniversary. Ask for Joe and you still get a free glass of wine, though the real business is baked clams and red-sauce seafood.
This page’s picks are spread wider. Benateri’s Italian Gourmet Deli, on 14th Avenue in College Point, has been a deli and caterer since 2002; its founder, Ben, started working at an Astoria deli at 12, and the place is still built around heroes and catering trays. Pizza Classica opened in 2003 in a small space on Francis Lewis Boulevard in Bayside and moved in 2007 to a larger room on Union Turnpike in Glendale. L’Italiano Trattoria, a brick-oven neighborhood spot on Horace Harding Expressway at Bell Boulevard in Bayside, has been on that corner since at least 2003. Cups of Pasta, on Queens Boulevard in Sunnyside, is the newcomer: pasta served by the cup, popular enough to open a second shop a few doors down.
Astoria still has Italian delis, but fewer each year: Dave & Tony Salumeria on 30th Avenue, open some 80 years by its owner’s count, announced in 2024 that it was closing.
